How We Pick Products
A short page about where our data comes from, how we rank things, and the things we won't do even when they'd make more money.
What we actually do
For each category we collect the current product listings, then record four things: price, stated fitment, warranty and compliance claims, and the owner rating with its review count. We read the low-rated reviews specifically, because that's where fitment problems and durability complaints surface.
We cross-check those listings against independent sources: owner forums, YouTube install and long-term videos, and manufacturer documentation. Where sources disagree, we say so rather than picking the more convenient one.
The three rankings
Every buying guide names three picks, each against a different criterion:
- Best value — the cheapest option that isn't compromised in a way you'd regret. Not simply the lowest price.
- Best design — judged on engineering and construction, not appearance alone, though appearance counts.
- Best all-round — what we'd buy with our own money if we wanted to think about it once and be done.
Naming three picks forces a real decision. A list of ten "top" products ranked in order is a search-engine artefact, not advice.
What we won't do
- We won't invent experience. We don't claim to have installed something we haven't. Where a claim comes from a forum thread or a video, we say that.
- We won't publish a performance number we can't source. If no dyno data exists for a part, we say the data doesn't exist.
- We won't backdate posts. Dates on this site are real publish dates. We'd rather look new than look established and be lying about it.
- We won't hide the downside. Every pick gets a sentence about what you're giving up.
How we make money, and what it doesn't affect
We earn a commission when someone buys through our links. That's the whole business model and we're not shy about it.
What it does not affect: which products we cover, which ones we name, or what we say about them. We don't accept payment for placement. A product with a higher commission does not outrank one with a lower commission — in practice the commissions in a given category are similar anyway, which makes the temptation smaller than you'd think.
If we ever publish a sponsored piece it will be labelled at the top, in the same place as a normal disclosure.
Corrections
If we got something wrong, we fix it and note the change. Send corrections to the address on the contact page. Prices and availability change constantly; we timestamp every price we quote so you can tell how stale it is.
